So, what is docosanol?

Docosanol is a long-chain saturated fatty alcohol that is commonly used as an active ingredient in over-the-counter topical medications for the treatment of cold sores. It works by preventing the herpes simplex virus from entering healthy skin cells and replicating, thus reducing the duration and severity of cold sore outbreaks. Docosanol is a safe and effective option for individuals who experience frequent cold sores and can be easily applied directly to the affected area. This odorless, colorless, and tasteless ingredient is also used in cosmetic formulations as an emollient to moisturize and protect the skin.
